NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

A refreshed brand identity for the Natural History Museum. Featuring an icon inspired by its historic architecture, recognising the building itself as a vital part of the museum’s heritage.

The challenge

The challenge was to create a logo that could accompany the museum’s name while still conveying the significance and identity of the institution. It also needed to be distinctive enough to work across international territories without conflicting with other Natural History Museums around the world. The concept draws on the experience of approaching the museum itself. Walking up the steps and standing beneath the grand entrance arch creates a powerful sense of anticipation before entering the building. This architectural moment became the inspiration for the logo, using the museum’s entrance as a recognisable and symbolic representation of the institution.

The Logo

For many years, the Natural History Museum has used its much-loved “N” logo, a mark that has become closely associated with the institution and has been successfully adapted across a wide range of media and campaigns showcasing the museum’s collections. Its familiarity and longevity made it an important reference point for the redesign. With this in mind, the aim was not to replace the recognisability of the “N”, but to evolve it. The new logo needed to integrate naturally within the museum’s wider visual architecture while remaining immediately identifiable. At the same time, the mark draws inspiration from Alfred Waterhouse’s iconic building, incorporating architectural cues that reflect the museum’s distinctive design.
